Montessori pedagogy is an educational approach focused on respecting each child’s rhythm and stimulating his or her autonomy.

Italy’s first female medical graduate, Maria Montessori drew on her scientific and psychological knowledge to bring a new way of looking at children. She began her career in a psychiatric clinic, where she observed that so-called “retarded” children lacked motor and sensory activities.
She quickly realized that these youngsters needed a stimulating environment, suitable materials and a specific pedagogical approach to progress. In 1907, she set up the first “Maison des Enfants” (Casa dei bambini) in Rome, where her method took shape.
Building on her success, Maria Montessori was soon called upon to train teachers and develop her approach. In 1929, she founded the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to preserve and disseminate her method worldwide. By the time of her death in 1952, there were already numerous schools inspired by her pedagogy. Today, there are over 22,000 Montessori schools on every continent.

The teaching materials, designed to meet children’s needs and arouse their interest, are divided into several main categories corresponding to their “sensitive periods”. Presented individually or in small groups, they enable each child to explore, correct and progress independently, while benefiting from the attentive guidance of the educator.
